Joy in Focus: A Happiness Index Dashboard

The Happiness Index is a global measure of well-being that assesses multiple indicators to determine individuals’ overall satisfaction within a country. It considers social support, which measures the availability of help from friends, family, and the community along with GDP per capita, reflecting economic prosperity. Additionally, healthy life expectancy is considered, accenting the role of public health and medical advancements.

Beyond economic and health-related factors, the index incorporates freedom to make life choices, measuring how much control individuals observe they possess over their decisions. Moreover, it also ponders generosity, measuring charitable actions and the willingness to help others, and perceptions of corruption, which influence trust in governments and institutions. These aspects collectively contribute to a country’s happiness score.

Individuals rate their level of satisfaction via a self-assessment scale known as the Cantril ladder, where they envisage their best possible life (10) and worst possible life (0). Since responses rely entirely on personal perceptions, the measure mirrors subjective well-being rather than purely objective metrics. The World Happiness Report assists as the primary source for these statistics.

This dashboard presents Happiness Index scores for 13 countries in 2024, offering valuable insights into global happiness trends and key influencing factors.

Denmark and Sweden take the second and third spots, respectively, with scores of 7.58 and 7.34. These Nordic nations have maintained their position over time.

On the other hand, Switzerland, which was previously among the top three in 2015, has seen a decline and reached seventh rank with a score of 7.07. Meanwhile, Norway and the Netherlands remain stable in the mid-tier of the top ten.
